April H. Reed holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL and a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a concentration in Information Systems from DePaul University in Chicago, IL. She is also a Project Management Institute (PMI) certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and is a Certified Scrum Master (CSM).

April completed her Ph.D. in 2008 after working 20+ years in various roles in the IT industry from programmer to project manager. She came to East Carolina University (ECU) in 2008 to teach in the MIS department.

During her career, she has taught Introduction to Management Information Systems, Software Design and Development, IS Project Management, Project Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, Project Leadership and Communication and Advanced Project Management Topics. She currently is the Project Coordinator for the Graduate Project Management Certificate Program.

April conducts research in IS/IT project management, educational simulations, pair programming and STEM education.  She has published articles Informing Science Journal, Journal of Computer Information Systems, International Journal of Project Management, International Journal of Information Technology Management, Journal of Applied Research in Higher Education, Journal of Information Technology Education, Journal of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering. 

She is a graduate of the ECU Engaged Outreach Scholarship Academy in 2018 where she developed and ran an MIS STEM Camp for Girls which introduces local middle and high school girls to technology. She continues to run this camp as a summer program. She is a graduate of the UNC Bridges Academic Leadership for Women in 2018. She is a past faculty advisor of the Association of Information Technology Student Organization.

Outside of her duties in academia, April has a passion for community service and serves as a volunteer and board member for a local food pantry. In that role, she performs grant writing, creates brochures and flyers and coordinates ECU student volunteers for the food pantry through the ECU Givepulse application. She has hosted ECU student volunteers for three Pirate Service Events at the food pantry in 2020 and 2021, Pirates Give 911, Pirate Make a Difference day and MLK Pirates Day of Service. At these events, students assembled canned good distribution bags for food pantry distribution events.

April enjoys the opportunity the mild NC weather gives her to garden most of the year. She is a crafter and uses her sewing skills for projects such as face masks.
