Curriculum Vitae
Dennis Barber III, PhD is the Chesnutt-Bond Distinguished Scholar of Entrepreneurship and an Associate Professor for the Miller School of Entrepreneurship in the College of Business at East Carolina University. He served as an Entrepreneurship Teaching and Learning Scholar with the United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) and is the President-Elect with the national Small Business Institute®. He is the Coeditor-in-Chief for the Journal of Small Business Strategy. Dr. Barber has served as a guest editor for multiple special issues on rural entrepreneurship and education with leading field journals. He founded the Rural Entrepreneurship Special Interest Group with USASBE and co-developed the Rural Entrepreneurship Education Certificate program. His work has been published in the Journal of International Entrepreneurship, Journal of Small Business Strategy, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, the Journal of Business Venturing Insights, Annals of Entrepreneurship Education & Pedagogy, among others. Dr. Barber conducts applied research on the topics of rural entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship education & pedagogy, economic development, public policy, and entrepreneurial attitudes. He currently teaches Innovation & Opportunity Assessment.
Dr. Barber teaches Family Business, Small Business Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation & Opportunity Assessment. He is also a Galliard Institute certified Family Business Advisor. He is the lead for student-led, consulting based courses with the Miller School and has won multiple national awards for his efforts with these courses. His Family Business course offers over 5,000 hours of service learning for family business in the region each year.
