Career Fairs: 7 Things to Know Before You Go
Meeting and interacting with recruiters face to face is still a critical part of the job search process, and career fairs offer job seekers a unique opportunity to make personal connections that are impossible when submitting a resume online.
The COB’c Career Center has compiled this list of 7 top tips for students to implement while attending a career fair.
- Build a strategy prioritizing what companies you want to speak with most
- Research the companies you are interested in speaking to prior to attending the fair
- Have a well-developed pitch statement ready when you introduce yourself to recruiters
- Plan to ask meaningful questions where answers would not be easily found online. Rather than simply asking “What position is your company hiring for?” consider “What type of person is most successful in your company?”
- When waiting in line to speak with the employer, listen to the conversations they are having with other students to better prepare you for your own exchange
- Introduce yourself to an employer even if they may not have a position available for you. That employer may be able to refer you to another employment opportunity
- Finally, follow up with everyone you met with a thank you email
