Scholarship for Native American Doctoral Student

The Graduate School has funds available to award one Native American UNC Campus Scholarships  to a new or returning doctoral student for the 2017 Fall semester.

Award recipients must be North Carolina residents for tuition purposes at the time of nomination, be admitted to one of ECU’s doctoral degree programs, demonstrate financial aid eligibility on the FAFSA, maintain full-time enrollment,  and be from a traditionally underrepresented population on the campus of ECU.  In addition, the Native American recipient must demonstrate tribal affiliation with a tribe recognized by the State of North Carolina or the United States federal government..

The UNC Campus Scholarship provides a minimum of $1000 per semester to recipients.  The Native American Scholarship award is $3600 per academic year. No funds are normally available during summer sessions.  Scholarships are renewable annually dependent on the availability of funds and the continuing good standing of the student.  No award will be extended beyond ten semesters (5 years).  The receipt of the UNC Campus Scholarship may require the ECU Office of Student Financial Aid to reduce other types of financial aid awarded to the student.

Tobe considered as a nominee,  send your name and  Banner ID to gradbus@ecu.edu as soon as possible for consideration with the email subject line of “Native American Scholarship.” The recipient will be selected from admitted and/or enrolled doctoral students who best meet the scholarship criteria and guidelines specified below. Graduate program directors will be notified of the award status of students.

This scholarship is administered by the ECU Office of Student Financial Aid in coordination with the ECU Graduate School.  After receiving permission from a nominee, the Graduate School will contact the Office of Student Financial Aid to confirm their FAFSA  status.  The Graduate School will notify the selected recipient of the award and inform them of the conditions of the scholarship.

Requirements and Terms/Conditions
Awardees will be chosen from the pool of nominees who best meet the scholarship criteria and guidelines given below.
·        Applicants must be North Carolina residents for tuition purposes
·        Applicants must be admitted to or enrolled in one of ECU’s doctoral degree programs
·        Students must demonstrate financial aid eligibility by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
·        Recipients must be registered as full-time students each semester (9 semester hours or 3 semester hours once the student has entered dissertation research, i.e. 9000 level course) and  maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3 to retain the scholarship.
·        Scholarships are renewable annually dependent on the availability of funds, the continued good standing of the student, demonstrated progress toward degree, and continued financial need.  In addition, continuous enrollment is required (excluding summer sessions) and no   award will be extended beyond ten semesters (5 years).
·        Eligible Native American students must demonstrate affiliation with a tribe recognized by the State of North Carolina or the United States federal government.

The following factors will also be considered in determining awards:

  • Whether an applicant is a first generation college student.
  • Whether an applicant is from traditionally underrepresented populations on the campus of East Carolina University; (may include but is not limited to regional, racial or ethnic diversity) wh
  • Whether an applicant can demonstrate significant financial need.
