What is Academic Integrity?

The College of Business is firmly committed to producing graduates with a high degree of integrity. We as business professionals are convinced that academic integrity has no grey areas; there is no such thing as cheating a “little bit.” We have the same penalty for all academic integrity violations: an “F” for that item or course and a letter placed in the student’s file. Not all violations lead to a grade of “F”; however, there are consequences tied to all actions.

If an ECU faculty member deems you in violation of the Academic Integrity Policy, visit this page to learn more about the appeals process.

Here are some examples of what an academic integrity violation can be:

  • Cheating – cheating is any unauthorized aid or assistance or the giving or receiving of unfair advantage on any form of academic work
  • Plagiarism – copying not only language, but also structure, ideas, and/or thoughts of another and adopting it as one’s own original work
  • Falsification/Fabrication – any untruth, spoken or written, regarding any circumstances related to academic work
  • Multiple Submission – submission of substantial portions of the same academic work for credit more than once without faculty authorization
  • Violation Assistance – knowingly helping or attempting to help someone else in an act that violates the academic integrity policy
  • Violation Attempts – attempting any act that, if completed, would constitute as an academic integrity violation
