Graduate Assistantship Opportunity – NC Agromedicine Institute
Position: Graduate Assistant – Aerosol and Gas Exposure Measurements Assistant
The NC Agromedicine Institute is seeking an Aerosol and Gas Exposure Measurements graduate assistant for the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semester, to help Dr. Sinan Sousan with his research projects. The position will be contracted for 20 hours per week for each semester, contingent upon job performance and availability. The Institute is located on the West Research Campus on VOA Site C Road, in Greenville, NC, but the work will be performed in a laboratory expected to be set up on the East Campus.
Position Description & Overview:
Occupational agriculture exposure to aerosol and various toxic gases have been associated with adverse respiratory diseases. Agriculture workers are exposed to higher dust concentrations especially in indoor operations. Low-cost sensors have become increasingly popular for field exposure studies. The focus of the research is aerosol and gas exposure measurements in occupational settings with low-cost sensors. Accurate measurements of aerosol and gas mass concentrations are crucial to understanding the relationship between increased mass concentrations and adverse health effects. The current project objectives are to build, test, and calibrate low-cost sensors in laboratory settings.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Construct an exposure chamber inside the laboratory.
- Operate low-cost sensors with an Arduino microcontroller.
- Conduct laboratory exposure assessment for low-cost sensors with different aerosol types and various gases.
- Present results at a conference.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled in an ECU graduate degree seeking program for fall 2018 semester.
- Graduate students with a background in industrial hygiene, engineering, or environmental science, or a related field are well suited for this position.
- Experience or enthusiastic to learn aerosol science.
Application Procedure:
Interested applicants should apply online at: https://ecu.peopleadmin.com . Search for student position # 00977. Also, please send an interest email to Dr. Sinan Sousan at Sousans18@ecu.edu and include a copy of your resume. Please copy Tina Clift (Cliftt@ecu.edu) on that email.
