URGENT GAOpp: STEPP Program Mentor

 

Position Description: STEPP Program mentors work closely with current students and all STEPP team members. Mentors support the college transition process and academic success of students in the program in both systematic and informal ways. Mentors work consistent hours each week, and on-duty hours include meetings with students on their assigned caseload as well as providing office coverage and on-the-spot assistance any student in the program.

 

Position Responsibilities Include:

 

Focus: Direct Service to Students

  • Meet a minimum of one hour each week with each assigned mentee. Follow the weekly plan of topics to address in each meeting, including developing a daily to-do list that reflects work in each course each day (as appropriate) and discussing other relevant academic issues. Maintain written records of all meetings using provided format.
  • Consistently follow assigned schedule of working hours, which will include acting as the primary source of direct support for students in the STEPP office during on-duty hours by providing office coverage and circulating throughout office to monitor and assist students.
  • Provide various types of assistance (primarily related to academic tasks) and respond to student questions as needed during on-duty hours.
  • Participate, as possible/appropriate, in STEPP activities that involve transition and program representation.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate boundaries with the students.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Focus: Collaboration and Communication

  • Meet weekly with STEPP Associate Director and other program mentors. (Weekly meeting time is TBD each semester; usually on Friday mornings.) Maintain ongoing and open communication.
  • Share any information about students that causes concern regarding their potential for academic progress and/or success at East Carolina University with STEPP Associate Director in a timely manner.
  • Using a specified format, complete daily and weekly logs and field notes detailing activities, requests for help from students, assistance provided, etc. Most field notes focus on objective information and academic topics; however, some field notes will need to include professional reflections or assessments of non-academic issues as well.
  • In the event of office hours when direct student support is not needed, assist with STEPP activities (record keeping, clerical, data collection, organization, materials development, course development, etc.) as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Candidates for this position:

  • Must be available to work a consistent schedule of either 20 or 25 hours per week in the STEPP office during traditional business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm). Individual schedules will be assigned at the beginning of each semester based on availability and office coverage needs. The maximum number of assistantship hours that an ECU graduate student can work is 25 per week. Please note that this position requires a commitment of either 20 or 25 hours and thus limits the possibility of other on-campus employment.
  • Must be able to commit to this position for both Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 semesters.
  • Must be able to begin working ASAP.
