Overview
This course introduces to students the major theoretical frameworks of policy making in the U.S. context and familiarizes students with the complex decision-making process for health care policy. It reviews major health policies and programs in the U.S. through historical and comparative perspectives and examines the role of policy science, interest groups, institutions, and environments and the contexts of legislative process for health care policy. An array of policy topics related to population health, rural health, health disparities, social determinants of health, the role of public health, as well as other health care challenges such as opioid epidemic and infant and maternal health will be also discussed. This course aims to equip students with the foundational knowledge of American policy process and the essential analytical and communication skills for policy analysis and participating in the policy making process for health care. The readings will be a combination of textbooks, journal articles, and other sources in health care and policy.
