Instructions for Requesting the Pass/Fail Option

Many of you have had questions about the pass/fail option being offered for Spring 2020. You must request the Pass/Fail option; it is not an automatic. Essentially, this semester should not hurt you academically, even if you’re on probation.

As a general rule, students with A’s and B’s should consider keeping the letter grades. Students with C’s should consider taking the Pass option. If you are trying to preserve a high GPA and get anything less than an A, you can choose the Pass option. With a Pass you still get credit for the course, it just doesn’t impact your GPA.

If you get an F and DO NOTHING, it will count in your GPA.  If you do not want that, you must select the Pass/Fail option for that course.  The F grade will still be present, but it will not count in the GPA.  F grades will look like “FZ” on your transcript if you choose the Pass/Fail option and will not be used in calculations.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Between May 13 and June 30, you can submit a form in PiratePort from the Registrar’s office if you need to convert any grades to a pass/fail.

You must request the Pass/Fail option for EACH course you want to utilize this option. For instance, if you are taking two classes this Spring, you can keep the letter grade for one class and request the Pass/Fail option for the other class.
