3 Minute Thesis Submissions Due October 20

From Dr. Kathy Cox, Associate Dean, East Carolina University Graduate School

We are excited to announce that the Three Minute Thesis competition is going VIRTUAL!  This event held each Fall semester is an outstanding way to share your research with campus and to learn more about what other research is taking place across campus.  You will remember that students present their research using only 1 slide and 3 minutes of time! Awards are given for an overall winner and we also have a “People’s Choice” award for the fan favorite.  The always coveted Department Cup is given to the program whose top 3 scores are the highest.  We have seen Biology take home the Department Cup a few times in a row….will your department break the streak??

Please make sure to read the virtual instructions website with all of the details.  There is a big change.  You do not register and then later submit your slide.  Instead, you will create a video of you doing your presentation and you will email that – and that is how you sign up.  So you have from now  until October 20th to discuss what you will present, video it, and email it to the Graduate School.  The event itself will be held November 4th and you will be able to go online and see other presentations. Judges will see the videos in advance so winners can be announced during a live event on November 4th.   Details of the live event are forthcoming.  For now, please talk with your research mentors about what topics you can use to develop into a presentation.  It does not have to be research related to a thesis or dissertation.  It can be research you are doing as part of your assistantship, as part of a class or as part of a culminating experience like an internship.  Your ECU faculty mentors can guide you and if you have questions, do not hesitate to email your questions to gradschool@ecu.edu.

The website is thorough, so please make sure to read all of the instructions! You can also see previous years’ winners and videos so you can get an idea of what is expected.  The Communication Center within the School of Communication can help you polish your presentation prior to you recording it.  We can’t wait to see what you submit!
