Students will work virtually with government and economic development leaders in Hyde County to update the county’s economic plan with a focus on entrepreneurship and small business success.
Hyde County is one of the least populous and most economically distressed counties in North Carolina. Classified as a Tier 1 county by the NC Department of Commerce, Hyde County has faced significant challenges in recent years due to the impacts of recent natural disasters. With recovery from Hurricane Dorian progressing, the county seeks assistance in updating its 2008 economic development strategic plan. The desire is to update the county’s plan to reflect an increased focus on entrepreneurship and small business success within the county. County leaders have requested that a graduate student, working hand-in-hand with community leaders, work to create a modern economic development strategy that will lead to sustained business growth on the mainland and Ocracoke Island.
The Rural Innovations Strengthening Eastern 29 (RISE29) program is funded by the Golden LEAF Foundation and is a new microenterprise program at ECU. The mission of RISE29 is to create or sustain jobs in rural communities across eastern North Carolina. RISE29 connects small business ideas with regional community need. Student teams will use data to develop and launch microenterprises, strengthen existing businesses with internship assistance, and commercialize new technology that enhances our eastern 29 counties. Phase I of RISE29 is focused in a four-county region including Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, and Pitt counties.
RISE29 internship participants are expected to work 20 hours per week during their RISE29 internship experience. Each graduate student selected for the program will receive a stipend of $4,500. For spring 2021, the RISE29 internship will be delivered in a hybrid, mostly virtual format.
