Research Assistant - Department of Criminal Justice

Fall/Spring 2021-2022
Dr. Michelle L. Malkin is seeking one Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) for the 2021-22 school year. The GRA will be based in the Department of Criminal Justice and will report to Dr. Malkin.

Responsibilities of the Graduate Research Assistant:
• Assist with research requests (e.g., literature searches, literature reviews, data cleaning,
data analysis)
• Potential opportunity with qualitative research including conducting interviews,
transcription, and coding
• Complete IRB certification
• Ensure sensitive data is kept secure and confidential
• Professional demeanor when communicating with faculty and staff
• ECU Safe Zone training may be required
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
• ECU graduate student enrolled full-time in a master’s or PhD degree program for the
2021-22 school year
• Continued enrollment with a 3.0 GPA or higher
• Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential data and information
• Demonstrated ability to work independently
• Demonstrated communication, organizational, and computer skills (including Microsoft
Office products)
o Experience with qualitative coding software (i.e. NViVO, Dedoose, etc.)
preferred, but not required
• Comfort working on LGBTQ+ issues and with LGBTQ+ individuals
• Familiarity and interest in criminal justice literature preferred (not required)
• Familiarity and interest in addiction (substance and/or behavioral) preferred (not
required)

Length of Appointment and Compensation:
The GRA will work 20 hours per week with an anticipated start date of 9/1/21 (depending on date of hire) and will work both Fall and Spring semesters. Specific weekly schedule TBD upon hire. 2022-23 reappointment possible. GRA’s are compensated $4,500/semester.

Work Location:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some work may be completed remotely. However, some oncampus work may be required. Office space is provided to the GRA in the ECU Rivers Building.
