Welcome to the COB! 7 Steps for an Easy Transition

1. Read the Getting Started booklet

Please click here for our Getting Started booklet with important information you need know as you begin your program.  It is important that you review this document in its entirety, as it will help answer many of the questions we are sure you have.  There are instructions for accessing the University’s electronic systems, registering for classes, and also policies and procedures of the College.  It includes helpful hints on beginning your first class in the program.

2. Activate Pirate ID

You must first register your PirateID by changing your initial password (https://pirateid.ecu.edu/) and logon to your PirateMail account (http://www.ecu.edu/cs-ecu/email_phone.cfm)

3. Complete the Pirates Aboard Orientation

All COB graduate students are required to complete the self-paced Pirates Aboard orientation course prior to starting any coursework. To help better prepare you for your first semester in graduate school, the Pirates Aboard course gives you an introduction to the program. The class is fully online, and is beneficial regardless if you intend to take online or face-to-face classes. The class covers information such as:

  • Technology including Blackboard and Saba Meeting
  • Case analysis and writing skills
  • Proctor search and selection

You have been added to the course in Blackboard and it will appear on your Blackboard home page. To login to Bb, click on the little Bb icon in the upper right quadrant of the ECU home page (www.ecu.edu) or go to https://blackboard.ecu.edu/.  Login using your Pirate ID and Password.

Make sure to complete the Pirates Aboard orientation course before your first advising appointment.

4. Schedule an Advising Appointment

In preparation for the upcoming Spring registration window, which opens November 3, we will be calling all new and current students. Starting on Monday, September 25, we will begin contacting all students via telephone. We will be calling the number we have on file for you, listed in Banner. We will be attempting to leave voicemails for all students who do not answer their phone; however, many students do not have their voicemail set up or the mailbox is full.

While an advising appointment is not required, we want to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to speak with their advisor prior to the registration period opening. During this call, MBA and Certificate students will be assisted with scheduling an appointment with your advisor to discuss any registration questions or other program related items. MSA’s and MS-ST’s will be called, but should email their advisor if they have registration questions.

If you would like an advising appointment, it is imperative that you schedule an advising appointment early, as advisors’ calendars tend to be full during the last half of October.

  • Appointments will be scheduled beginning the week of October 2.
  • Keep in mind that registration opens at 1:00pm on Friday, November 3.
  • If you do not receive a phone call by October 9, please call the office. Either the number (if we had one) on file was incorrect or the message we left was not delivered to you.
  • Appointments may be held in-person or on the phone.

5. Register for Classes

Spring 2018 registration opens November 3 at 1:00pm; no students can register for classes prior to this time. You can find our current, future, and past schedules here.  Previous semesters’ schedules can be used to help you plan for future semesters.  Instructions for how to register for classes can be found here.

Keep in mind that Spring 2018 registration courses will be released after October 9.

6. Review Additional Resources and Support from the Graduate School

All new graduate students are enrolled in the Graduate School Orientation for New Students course in Blackboard (ECU’s course management software). College of Business graduate students  DO NOT have to complete the Graduate School Orientation; all this information and more is covered in the Pirates Aboard orientation course. However, you are welcome to review the Orientation materials and attend any events the Graduate School hosts for new students. More info can be found here: http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/gradschool/Graduate-Student-Orientation.cfm
