Career Fairs: How to Prepare

Meeting and interacting with recruiters face to face is still a critical part of the job search process, and career fairs offer job seekers a unique opportunity to make personal connections that are impossible when submitting a resume online.

Here are some great tips on how to prepare for the career fair:

  1. Research the companies that will be attending the career fair and prioritize which companies you’d like to speak with most. Visit this site to view the attending companies.
  2. Develop a personal pitch that allows you to introduce yourself to recruiters
  3. Plan to ask meaningful questions where answers would not be easily found online. Rather than simply asking “What position is your company hiring for?” consider “What type of person is most successful in your company?”
  4. Be prepared by updating and polishing your resume. Don’t forget to bring plenty of copies
  5. Dress appropriately. This event requires that students be dressed business professional. View how to dress professionally here
  6. Don’t plan to visit tables simply to grab their ‘freebees’ that they bring and ask recruiters before taking materials from their tables
  7. Smile and be personable
  8. Finally, follow up with everyone you meet with a thank you email
