POSITION SUMMARY

The Graduate Assistant will be assigned to work on the ECU Horizon Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Engagement Living and Learning Community (Horizon LLC) in Spring and Summer Session I of 2018. In this role, the student will be responsible for developing and implementing program activities for the new Horizon LLC, which will house its first cohort in fall 2018. In addition, the Graduate Assistant will work with Horizon LLC leadership to develop a program evaluation and assessment plan for the Horizon LLC.

OVERVIEW OF INNOVATION, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, & ENGAGEMENT LIVING AND LEARNING COMMUNITY

Student engagement in educationally purposeful activities inside and outside of the classroom is a precursor to high levels of student learning and personal development as well as an indicator of educational effectiveness.[i] The Horizon LLC at ECU was approved in October 2017. Recruitment and planning for students to join the Horizon LLC is now underway.

The purpose of developing the Horizon LLC is to: (1) develop a residential learning community organized for on-campus living so that students accepted into the Horizon LLC have increased opportunities for interaction, engagement, and learning exchanges and academic success; and, (2) attract students from multiple programs who are interested in innovation, entrepreneurship, and engagement. As such, Horizon LLC students will participate in two university academic courses. Additionally, co-curricular activities will be provided to students.

In addition, the Horizon LLC will be linked to the I-Corps @ ECU program. This National Science Foundation program embraces ideation, innovation and commercialization of inventions by using proven methods in lean launch, customer discovery and business model innovation. The project aims to prepare & support ECU Faculty, staff, students and friends in the process of validating the potential for new products, services and technologies and/or launching new companies.

Students will be provided with innovation pathways as a scaffolding mechanism with the help of interested faculty, coaches, and mentors. The Horizon LLC will integrate research-based approaches (e.g., collaborative learning groups) and activities, outside of the classroom that will seek to actively engage students. Integrating these diverse innovative and social activities into meaningful experiences will provide opportunities for authentic learning collaboration, and continued leadership development.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDACY

Applicants for the position of Graduate Assistant for the Horizon LLC shall possess a Bachelor’s degree and be enrolled in an accredited degree-granting graduate program at East Carolina University. Applicants should be in good conduct and behavioral standing with ECU, as well as with local, state, and federal laws. Qualified applicants should exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills­, possess knowledge of teamwork, leadership, time and stress management, planning and organizing, problem solving, diverse cultural appreciation, and a desire to learn about living and learning communities. Applicants should have a continued enrollment of a 3.0 or higher and be able to work 20 hours per week per semester. An aptitude for Microsoft Office and social media is preferred. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate the ability to create innovative programs and events that maximize student involvement with university and community partners.

SCOPE OF THE POSITION

The Graduate Assistant for the Horizon LLC is an appointment during Spring 2018, with the possibility to continue the assistantship after the contract. This position requires a commitment of 20 hours per week, with the exact schedule to be determined upon hiring. The Graduate Assistant will report directly to the Assistant Dean for Innovation in the College of Education and the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Community Engagement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Graduate Assistant for the Horizon LLC shall be responsible for the following duties:

  • Develop Horizon LLC program planning with the Horizon LLC leadership team;
  • Participate in LLC partners’ meetings;
  • Create a research-based program evaluation and assessment plan for the Horizon LLC;
  • Perform outreach duties during spring student recruitment events;
  • Integrate research-based approaches (e.g., collaborative learning groups) and activities, outside of the classroom that will seek to actively engage students
  • Participate in I-Corps training; and,
  • Other duties as assigned.

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT & COMPENSATION

  • February 15 through June 30, 2018
  • Stipend of $6,000
