ECU classes to end after 12 p.m. Tuesday; no classes remainder of week

GREENVILLE, N.C. (9/10/2018) – Because of the anticipated effects of Hurricane Florence to Greenville, Pitt County and eastern North Carolina this week, campus administrators have announced that East Carolina University will not hold classes scheduled to start after 12 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 and will not hold classes for the remainder of this week.

All students are highly encouraged to travel home before the tropical storm force winds are expected to begin in Greenville on Wednesday night. For those students who live on campus and are not able to travel home, the residence halls will remain open. Campus Living will send a direct message to students in residence halls.

The Greenville area may begin to experience tropical storm force winds as early as Wednesday night. Emergency response vehicles will not operate when sustained winds reach 45 miles per hour. Expected rainfall amounts will depend on the track of Florence, but 7–10 inches of rainfall could be expected in a short period of time. Should the storm stall over eastern North Carolina, upwards of 15 inches is possible.

Regardless of the track, the potential for several days of heavy rainfall, flooding and gusty winds across portions of eastern North Carolina will exist. These impacts may lead to downed trees, prolonged power outages, blocked roadways, closed bridges, and disruptions to water / sewer supply. Members of the ECU community should ensure they have a hurricane plan in place. Remain alert and only monitor official and credible sources for the latest information.

Effective 8 a.m. Tuesday, an ECU call center will be in operation at 252-737-5100 for students, parents and staff who have non-emergency questions related to the hurricane. It will be staffed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. On Twitter, use #ECUFlorence with questions during business hours.

For employees, beginning at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, the university will be operating under Condition 1 of the UNC System Adverse Weather and Emergency Event policy. Beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 the university will operate under Condition 2 continuing through 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. Employees should check with their managers regarding schedules and alternate work locations.

For details about the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy and Condition levels, visit www.ecu.edu/prr/06/45/02 .

Note: If the storm takes a dramatic shift, the university may adjust the condition status for faculty and staff. Monitor ecu.edu/alert for updates.

ECU Physicians clinics anticipate closing on Thursday, Sept. 13 and Friday, Sept. 14.

The university plans to send ECU Alert messages regarding next week’s schedule by early afternoon Saturday, Sept. 15.

Anyone traveling this week and over the weekend should pay close attention to the weather, including flood and hurricane forecasts, to ensure they are not traveling into hazardous areas.

Do not swim in floodwaters; swift-moving water and/or entanglement could result in drowning. Floodwaters typically contain raw sewage and hazardous chemicals.

Students who live off campus are encouraged to take their valuables along with pets, medications and class materials.

No home athletic events are scheduled for this week.

Check studentaffairs.ecu.edu for updates on student affairs services such as dining, transit and student rec center.
