ECU MBA Student-Teams Compete Internationally

This spring, ECU MBA students in Dr. Joy Karriker’s capstone Strategic Management course will compete with students from 24 other business schools as they tackle a brand new case study, authored by the Yale School of Management, requiring innovative thinking at the intersection of corporate profitability and positive social and environmental impacts. Student participants will step into a real-life, time-sensitive scenario demanding integrative decision-making — not unlike the challenges they will face as the next generation of business leadership.

The Aspen Institute’s Case Competition offers a meaningful opportunity for reflection on the significant and positive influence that a well-managed business can have on society. Karriker notes, “Our students are remarkably talented, and I am grateful to the COB leadership and our professional judges for their support, which allows our MBAs the opportunity to prove their capabilities on the global stage.”

The Aspen Institute’s Business & Society International MBA Case Competition was founded in 2009, inspired by the Walter V. Shipley Business Leadership Competition that the Aspen Institute administered from 2002-2008, as well as by a strong desire to craft a best-in-class incentive program that encouraged future business leaders to innovate at the intersection of corporate profitability and positive social, environmental and ethical impact.

Now in its tenth year, the Competition offers a singular opportunity for students from 25 business programs worldwide to reflect on the significant influence – and potential for good – that a well-managed business can have in society. The program is consistently at capacity, with a waiting list of MBA programs forming a year in advance. With a prize pool of approximately $35,000 – unmatched in the MBA case competition circuit – Aspen’s program aims to communicate that social, environmental and ethical issues are not at the periphery of business; indeed, they are central to business growth in the 21st century.

Go Pirates!!!
