10 GA Positions with the Office of Community Engaged Research

The Office of Community Engaged Research seeks up to 10 Graduate Assistants for the 2021-2022 academic year. These positions will be assigned to support community engaged research teams led by faculty participating in the Engagement and Outreach Scholars Academy (EOSA). Assistantships will range from 10-20 hours per week during the 2021-2022 Academic Year. Graduate assistants will participate in the Student Engagement and Outreach Academy (SEOSA) during fall 2021.

Graduate students in good standing who are enrolled at East Carolina University qualify for this opportunity. Applications received by March 15th by 5PM will have priority consideration. Positions will remain open until filled.
Graduate research assistants may benefit from:

SCHEDULE

Positions will range from 10 or 20 hours per week, paid twice monthly. All assistantships will begin August 23, 2021 and end April 27, 2022. Hourly contracts will be based on project needs.

 

ORGRANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

EOSA is a national model for engaged scholarship. EOSA was created to increase the knowledge of and motivation and resource capacity for engagement with partners outside the university. EOSA and SEOSA provide professional development and project support for community engaged research and creative activities. Projects exemplify a culture of partnership, reciprocity and high-quality scholarship. Faculty selected to the program participate in cohort-based workshops and develop a research project with their community partner.

 

ECU graduate and undergraduate students from the EC Scholars program are assigned to work on EOSA projects and participate in the Student Engagement and Outreach Academy. Students come from a variety of fields of study.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Graduate students that apply for the assistantship are required to attend SEOSA workshops (one per month on Friday afternoons during fall semester), learn about community engaged research and are involved in project design, data collection and analysis, publication and other aspects of scholarly research and creative activity working directly with faculty in the EOSA. Graduate assistants should be prepared to act as scholarly mentors for undergraduate EC scholars assigned to project teams.

 

LOCATION OF RESEARCH AND SUPERVISOR INFORMATION

Typically, EOSA projects follow a hybrid model where the majority of work is completed on

the ECU campus or in a virtual environment. In most cases, there are visits to community

partner offices and/or research sites. The expectation for fall 2021 is that the EOSA will

follow all university, state, and federal guidelines and/or protocols related to COVID-19

safety or other public health concerns. Thus, it is possible that this assistantship will be

conducted in a mostly, if not totally, virtual environment.

 

EXPECTATIONS AND SCOPE OF POSITION

  • Attend Student Engagement and Outreach Scholars Academy workshops.
  • Complete research tasks as assigned by EOSA scholar (literature reviews, surveys using Qualtrics, data analysis)
  • Assist with data collection, metrics, and reporting (quantitative and qualitative) and maintaining data storage appropriately within IRB guidelines
  • Attend, arrange, and follow up on weekly meetings; take minutes
  • Maintain clear and open communication with the EOSA scholar and community partners at all times.
  • The ideal candidate should be a self-directed and motivated individual who is interested community engaged scholarship. The GA needs to display strong interpersonal skills, as they will work directly with the EOSA scholar. This individual should be well organized and capable of multitasking through sufficient time management. Other important skills the GA should possess strong verbal and written communication skills and solid teamwork.
  • Other responsibilities may vary based on program needs and on the background of the individual selected for the position.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & APPLICATION PROCESS

Desirable candidates include degree-seeking graduates enrolled at East Carolina University in good academic standing (GPA 3.0) who can commit at least 10 hours per week to this role. Applicants must be confident and comfortable speaking with and interacting with people. Applicants must be capable of performing fundamental computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, Word) for development of workshop materials. Proficiency in Qualtrics and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) is preferred. Duties may require some evening or weekend hours depending on the outreach program needs. Ideal applicants would also have educational background and/or interests may include innovation, service learning, and/or community-based learning.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Understanding/experience with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
  • Previous experience in public speaking, program planning, and working in the community
  • Current CITI training for social/behavioral sciences and E-Pirate profile
