Registration Information for Students on Academic Probation

Academic Probation | The Basics

– When your GPA drops below a 3.0, the Graduate School places you on Academic Probation.

–  You have 9 attempted hours (3 classes) to get your GPA back up to a 3.0 For every C earned, you need an A to balance out the GPA.

– W’s (Withdrawals) count as part of the 9 total hours attempted if the class is dropped after the Census Date. Check the academic calendar for this date each semester.

– You do not have to take all 3 classes in the same semester.

Academic Probation | Removing Holds

– Once grades post for the current semester, the COB Grad Programs office reviews grades the following Monday.

– The Grad School is notified if your probation status should be ended or continued, or if you should be terminated from the program.

– The Grad School aims to update the holds 24-48 hours after COB Grad Programs submits our reviews.

  • If your GPA is 3.0 or higher, the hold is removed from your account. You will be able to register with during the regular registration period for subsequent semesters.
  • If your GPA is below 3.0 but it is still mathematically possible to earn a 3.0 in the remaining credit hours in your probation status, the hold will be temporarily lifted to allow you to register for classes. The hold is added back after the drop/add period is over for the current semester.
  • If your GPA is below 3.0 and it is NOT mathematically possible for your to earn a 3.0 in the remaining credit hours of your probation status, you will be terminated from the program. In some instances, students who have been terminated can sit out for a year, then be readmitted to the program. Check with your advisor for more information.
