Athletes and researchers gain knowledge outside of their expertise

Lee Brown, director of the Cunanan Center for Professional Success, was busy this fall reaching out to groups, including student athletes and researchers with the Brody School of Medicine. The participants are in different fields, but the advice was very similar – expand outside of their norm to increase possible opportunities.
He recently spoke to ECU athletes about what it truly means to be a Pirate, both on and off the field. Brown emphasized the importance of building their personal brand, developing effective communication skills and actively networking to create future opportunities. Brown encouraged student-athletes to carry the Pirate standard beyond athletics by representing themselves with integrity, striving for excellence and investing in personal and professional growth throughout their college journey and beyond.
With those at the Brody School of Medicine, Brown emphasized the importance of stepping beyond the laboratory to expand their professional reach. Brown highlighted how strategic networking can strengthen collaboration, broaden perspectives, and ultimately enhance the real-world impact of their work. He encouraged researchers to view networking not just as relationship-building, but as a powerful tool that transforms innovative research into meaningful, far-reaching outcomes.
