Grad PIRATE Talks

Grad PIRATE Talks are a series of graduate student led webinars focused on inclusion, equity, and social justice. The goal of these talks is to bring social justice issues to light and educate the Pirate Community at large on how race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, and more affect the lives of our Pirate Nation and our Nation as a whole.

Through intentional and purposeful dialogue, we hope to build a more inclusive and equitable future for East Carolina University.

We wanted to reach out to you with an opportunity for your students to become actively involved and engaged in the third installment of this series.  We are looking for graduate students who are passionate about social justice issues and would be interested in giving a 15-30-minute talk on how these issues affect their area of study.  Our goal is to challenge impassioned individuals to propose ways in which we, as a community, can better the way we teach, think and act on these issues.  A few student-led seminars that were presented in the 2020-2021 school year were:

  • Impact of race on maternal/fetal outcomes
  • U.S. History and Other Unfortunate Events We Don’t Claim
  • On the Road Toward an Anti-Racist Multicultural Institution
  • Gender Bias Within the Criminal Justice System: Both Sides of The Equation

We see these webinars as a way to educate the Pirate Community on social justice issues and to raise awareness of the incredible diversity that exists at East Carolina University.  By engaging students, faculty, and administration, we hope to make meaningful and lasting changes at ECU.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please reach out to me or one of my co-chairs. Feel free to forward this to any interested students or faculty. They can similarly reach out to us.

Thank you for your time and for working with us to create a safe, equitable and inclusive environment for our Pirates,
