Big Data Healthcare Symposium Held March 31st

Leaders from SAS, Vidant, Trillium and ECU Discuss Big Data and Healthcare in Eastern North Carolina

The Center for Healthcare Management Systems at the College of Business, along with SAS, recently held the 2017 Big Data and Business of HealthCare Symposium on Friday, March 31, in Joyner Library.

The symposium was attended by North Carolina data analytics and healthcare researchers and practitioners to exchange opinions, ideas and research findings. Discussions focused on how innovative solutions and techniques can assist local, regional, national and international organizations with data analytics. It also highlighted the application of research in various industries and the business value of analytics in healthcare from managerial, social, behavioral, technical and political perspectives.


ECU grad and athletics hall of fame alumni Tammy Lenox, SAS director of health and life sciences presales, presented topics on visualization, exploration and analysis trends in big data healthcare, as well as its opportunities and challenges.

Dr. Andre’ De Waal, SAS analytical consultant, discussed SAS’ web-based products that leverage the company’s high-performance technologies that allows companies to see data patterns and identify analysis opportunities.

An expert panel also discussed the prospects, opportunities and challenges of developing big data initiatives in Eastern North Carolina. The panel included:

  • Dr. Haiyong Liu, economics chair, Thomas Harriot College of Arts And Sciences, ECU;
  • Dr. Ray Hylock, assistant professor, Department of Health Services and Information Management, College of Allied Health Sciences, ECU;
  • Dr. Prasanna Menta, director, Vidant Health; and
  • Chris Penrod, director, Trillium Health Resources.
  • Dr. Huigang Liang, the Teer Endowed Chair in Research in the College of Business, moderated the panel.
