Marshall to Participate in BB&T Faculty Leadership Fellows Program

Craig Marshall, Teaching Instructor in the School of Hospitality Leadership will participate in the BB&T Faculty Leadership Fellows Program. Participants will work with a small team of faculty from various disciplines across the ECU campus throughout the Spring 2020 semester to (a) explore principles of student leadership skill development and the integration of those skills with course content and design; (b) share ideas and feedback with one another through a Teaching Squares observation cycle; (c) make course adjustments, as needed, to enhance student leadership skill development, (d) share learning with one another and the Office for Faculty Excellence, and (e) develop a professional development resource that depicts specific strategies they are using to put leadership skills into action in their courses. Small teams will meet weekly, and the full cohort of Faculty Leadership Fellows will meet monthly.

Key Components of the Faculty Leadership Fellows Program

  • Exploration – Participants will utilize resources that are provided by the Office for Faculty Excellence and shared among teams to explore methods for building leadership skills in students through existing or new course activities and assignments.
  • Observation – Participants will observe one another using a “leadership skill-development lens” in order to encourage one another, trade practical ideas, and build collective insights that can strengthen the leadership focus in all of their courses.
  • Action – Participants will try new approaches to leadership capacity building in a selected course while working with the OFE and team members to design manageable and effective methods of assessing the impact of selected instructional design strategies on students.
  • Reflection & Dissemination – Through regular meetings with Faculty Leadership Fellows, updates to the OFE, and a professional development resource, participants will share what they are learning in practical ways with one another and the larger ECU community.
