SHL Alumnus Spotlight - Nicholas Cumbee

My name is Nicholas Cumbee, and I am a 2020 graduate from East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Leadership with a concentration in Food & Beverage Management and a minor in Business Administration. I am employed at my former high school, Bear Grass Charter School (BGCS). This is my first year teaching, and I am truly blessed to be able to direct a new program titled “Food & Culinary Arts” during the Spring ’23 semester. I will be responsible for creating the curriculum for this new program, which is exciting and extremely nerve-wracking at the same time.

Along with the kitchen at BGCS being outdated and needing major improvements, there are many obstacles to overcome to allow the culinary program to produce the greatest benefit for BGCS students. Despite these obstacles, my collaboration with Dr. O’Halloran, the School of Hospitality Leadership Director, has tremendously helped me. His knowledge and guidance, along with the help of many others in the surrounding community, have already helped me pave the way for a successful program at BGCS.

The School of Hospitality Leadership has helped me in many ways by preparing me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to manage and lead successfully. SHL at ECU offered me an outstanding hospitality leadership program that enhanced my education beyond what I could have imagined at the time. As I embark on my new journey as the new “Food and Culinary Arts” director at BGCS, I am employing these skills in the design of my curriculum and setting up my kitchen. I am very grateful for all the knowledge I gained through the SHL program and its continued support. I would not be in the position I am in today without this dynamic program and its amazing faculty.
