SHL Alumni Spotlight - Kyle Smith

Kyle Smith graduated from ECU and the School of Hospitality Leadership in 2016. He is the current director of acute services at Gale Healthcare Solutions.

We recently caught up with the SHL alumni where he shared his experiences and where his career has taken him.

I went to college with the hopes of becoming a Crime Scene Investigator. This quickly changed when I tapped into my passion for service and restructured my future, diving head-first into hospitality. My new goal was to work my way to becoming a General Manager in the hotel industry. This goal was met in the Summer of 2019, but in my time spent achieving this, I learned that my passion for service was applicable in industries outside of hospitality.

While still living in Greenville with my wife and two dogs, I decided to take a leap and pursue the challenges of the Healthcare Tech industry, focusing on staffing and human resource solutions. The irony behind this is that during my time at ECU, I wrote (with the help of Dr. Robert O’Halloran) and published a report outlining many of the difficulties facing the hospitality industry from a human resources and employee turnover standpoint. Using the skills and attributes learned over the years, I have made my way to overseeing the operation and expansion of Gale Healthcare’s acute services division.

My four years at East Carolina University flew by, but the experiences, knowledge gained, and relationships built will last a lifetime. Everything from my time spent at ECU plays an intricate role in my professional and personal life.
