ECU Alternative Spring Break “Staycation” Attracts College of Business Students

Written By Dr. Susanne Killian, Career Counselor, CoB Career Center

When we think of Spring Break we often image sun, sand and sleep. While most of our ECU student body is taking advantage of such luxuries, a group of our College of Business LLC students and others are participating in a novel Alternative Spring Break program right here in Greenville. While alternative spring break programs have been available for many years, this particular program is a new offering for ECU students.

Students not only volunteer with the Greenville Community Shelter during their break but they become residents as well. The group sleeps at the shelter, dines with the residents, prepares food and provides housekeeping services. No sleeping in for this group! In addition, they explore on foot many of the support services offered to Greenville residents. These services include community gardens, places of employment, after school care and tutoring centers as well as local groceries and establishments where residents of the shelter can shop. Students explored the city on foot to help them understand a life without a car or ECU transportation. This is the first time a program such as this has been implemented at ECU by the Volunteer and Service Learning Center.

These types of activities are important to students who are studying business as they can provide perspective and aid in the understanding of socioeconomic diversity. In addition, volunteering diversifies a student’s academic and career portfolio while providing leadership opportunities. It is also just simply the right thing to do and we should be very proud of our students for wanting to go above and beyond the typical university experience.
