Savvy Networking Lands Student her Dream Internship

Junior marketing student Victoria Centeno made the most of the college’s first-ever Business Leadership Conference this past spring, arriving early to sessions and mingling with speakers. Her initiative paid off when she connected with one presenter – the head of a marketing strategy firm. Centeno followed up after the event, submitting her bio and other writings. She was ultimately offered an 11-week position through the company’s Workforce Readiness Internship Program.

“A few summers ago, I applied for the same internship and didn’t even make it to the interview – I was told ‘no’ via email,” Centeno said. “When I read that the company CEO planned to speak at the Business Leadership Conference, I arrived early to her session and met her before she began presenting.  I not only earned an interview after that, I landed the internship and will begin at the end of May. Had it not been for the Leadership Conference, I don’t think I would have this incredible opportunity.”

Originally from Miami, Fla., Centeno, was raised in Raleigh and is of Cuban descent.  She joined the College of Business’ Living-Learning Center her freshman year, where she enjoyed getting involved and networking with alumni early on. She also serves as a “host” for the College of Business, working closely with the Associate Dean to help greet different groups including the Business Advisory Council, scholarship students, and other special guests.  She plans to graduate in May 2016.
