Windsor Sustainable Tourism Outing
Jeremy Maxik, a student in the Master of Sustainable Tourism program in the School of Hospitality Leadership organized an educational guided tour of Windsor’s Parks and The Cashie River via kayak. Windsor is focusing on developing sustainable community-based tourism to help diversify their economy. Students and faculty from the program participated, and navigated the Cashie River on Saturday, March 26, 2016. The group gathered in Windsor, NC at the Cashie River Center and then launched at about 11:00am from the Hoggard Mill Road Bridge Access.
In addition to being a student in the MS program, Jeremy is also the recreation director for Windsor, North Carolina. Jeremy was the group’s guide and shared the development of the kayaking and outfitter business on the Cashie River. The group docked at lunch time and were provided a tour of downtown Windsor and its development plans.
After the break, the group paddled to Cashie River Campground and Treehouse Village for a tour of the tree houses that are being erected along the river. Windsor is working with “The Treehouse Guys” and the project progress will be shown on the DIY Network. When completed the Treehouse will be for rentals.
It was a great day to experience tourism development and sustainability in action in eastern North Carolina. Jeremy Maxik headed the group which included MSST student’s Georgette Ponder and Clay Barber, Professors Cynthia Deale (Interim director of the MSST program) and Bob O’Halloran from the School of Hospitality Leadership and visitors Kaitlin and Nathan Brown.
