SHL Students Complete Community Projects

School of Hospitality Leadership students in HMGT 4040 (Producing Meetings, Events, and Conventions course) are out participating in community events while developing leadership skills as event planners. Groups in Frank Cox’s class were instructed to select an approved community event where they could participate in a roll-up-your-sleeves and get-to-work event. Students are responsible for assisting with event set-up, logistics, procedures, operations, marketing, tear down, and overall participation. Response has been so positive that community event coordinators are already trying to line up students to help with future events.

Two of the student groups have already completed their event project. One group focused on the ECU Alumni Scholarship Classic golf tournament. The day before the tournament, students prepared participant gift bags, created table decorations, and documented player registration – and on tournament day they were each assigned various tasks. As one  group member stated, “we were there from 7am to 7pm,” the day of the tournament.

A second group participated in the Arts of the Pamlico’s Inaugural Hands-on Arts Festival held in Washington, NC on September 24th. In preparation for the event, students were actively involved in identifying two media and presentation events that students could attend to share information about the festival. Students reviewed social media strategies and delivered posters to identified outlets prior to the event. They prepared craft materials, filled vendor packets, refined their skills in face and hand painting, and anything else they were asked to do.
