College Student Group Receives Prestigious Award from World’s Largest HR Association

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) awarded a 2016-2017 Merit Award designation to the College’s SHRM student chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student chapter members.
The SHRM student chapter merit award program, which began in 1972, encourages student chapters to require from its members ongoing excellence in the following areas: student chapter requirements, chapter operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession, and SHRM engagement.
“These chapters truly represent the future of the HR profession,” said Susan Post, SHRM-SCP, East Divisional Director at SHRM and the lead for SHRM’s Student Programs. “Their achievements go above and beyond their everyday academic and work commitments, and we applaud the positive impact their efforts have on their schools, their local communities and beyond.”

“I am so proud SHRM recognized this amazing chapter for a job well done,” said Sharon Justice, College faculty member and chapter adviser. “This is their highest award, yet, and the bar is set high for moving forward. I see great things on the horizon for this chapter.”
SHRM student chapters had the opportunity to earn an award based on the number of activities they completed during the merit award cycle, which was April 1, 2016, to March 31, 2017.
SHRM@ECU has been active in supporting students as they explore the human resources profession. This year the chapter hosted monthly events with guest speakers and alumni who are in the field of HR. One of the highlights of the year was a job preparation panel discussion and a resume and interview prep session. They have participated in fundraising events, and sent a group of students to the regional Student Case Competition. This chapter has been active in the College with membership from various majors at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
SHRM is the world’s largest HR professional society, representing 285,000 members in more than 165 countries.
