SHL Students Complete Summer Internships

By Frank Cox, Teaching Instructor
School of Hospitality Leadership

During the summer, many SHL students completed the 400-hour internship requirement for the HMGT 3990 course. These students were scattered throughout the nation working in the lodging, food and beverage, convention and tourism industries. During my travels, I was able to connect with several students and would like to share photos taken at various locations.

Morgan Smith was tasked with assisting group and catering sales managers at the One Ocean Resort & Spa in Atlantic Beach, FL.

The Coral Bay Club at Atlantic Beach, NC picked up six of our students. They were all hard at work prior to the photo; waiting tables, setting up and tearing down for different events, and serving guests on the beach.

Erika Lee was all smiles when I showed up at her counter at the Chick-fil-A located at Colonial Mall in Greenville, NC. The smile is what hospitality is all about.

Four of our students interned at The Umstead Hotel and Spa. Their responsibilities included serving guests in the pool area.

Hayley Morrissey interned at the Liberty Tree Tavern at Epcot Center. This was Hayley’s third trip as part of the Disney College Program.

Elizabeth Ward completed her internship in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the Santa Fe Hilton Buffalo Thunder. While the heat index in Greenville was 108 on July 23rd, the temperature in Santa Fe was a cool 79 degrees.

This is a small sampling of the SHL students that worked to complete their internship requirement this summer. I wish time would have allowed me to visit with all interns, but I’m certain that they all represented the SHL, COB and ECU well, and brought a high level of skill and integrity to the workplace. Congratulations to all our student interns!
