STEM CAMP Scheduled for November

The MIS STEM Camp for Girls will be held on November 3rd, 17th and 18th and hosted by the Department of Management Information Systems in the College of Business.

The project was developed by Dr. April Reed as a community engagement outreach project (EOSA) for middle and high school girls from local Pitt County schools.  The three-day camp will expose camp participants to the world of MIS and MIS careers.  Girls will be taught how to develop a web page and how to write code using Webstarts and Alice software.  They will collaborate in small teams and use their newly-learned skills to develop a small application that informs about a social issue or benefits a community organization. The girls will present their project on the last day at the closing ceremony to parents and other attendees.

Women working in MIS fields from the community will judge projects and MIS alum from the Raleigh area will attend to network with the students. Donna Phillips, an ECU College of Business Alum and Sr. Economic Development Manager at Duke Energy will speak about how to be successful when working in a male-dominated field.
