Q&A with Molly Kube
Q&A with Molly Kube explains how her internship with Speedway, LLC, led to a permanent full-time position.
How did you learn about the internship?
During a College of Business class, my current boss and a few other employers came in to speak about their experiences, answer questions, and offer advice. Afterwards, I took the opportunity to introduce myself and get her business card. A few weeks later as I planned to attend the career fair, I noticed that Speedway was participating as an employer. So, I emailed my contact expressing my interest in the company, visited their table, and the rest is history.
Describe your experience at this company.
I began my internship as an operations intern during the summer of 2017. My experience started with a trip to the corporate office in Enon, Ohio where I met with executives of the company, toured offices, and was warmly welcomed into the Speedway family. The next phase of the internship was to shadow a general manager of a store in Greenville. I also shadowed a district manager, a marketing coordinator, recruiters and the HR advisor. At the end of the summer, I was lucky enough to return to Enon and give a presentation to the VP of Human Relations. The presentation was a recommendation for a recruiting tagline “Start Your Story at Speedway.” The department loved the idea and launched the recruiting campaign company-wide.
Describe your experience at the College of Business
ECU’s student population is more than triple the number at my previous university in Missouri, and the opportunities reflect that. The career fairs have more employers; the support from the COB is stronger; the importance of internships and relationships are more emphasized; and hard work does not go unnoticed.
How did the College of Business prepare you for this successful internship?
Most importantly, the COB taught me that opportunities usually do not fall into your lap. You have to go out and create opportunities for yourself. In addition to that, the COB stresses the importance of network experience and connections; and, I recognize the significance of this lesson every day in my work life.
Was there a moment during your internship where you knew that your ECU COB education had paid off?
When I went to Ohio the first time, we had multiple meals with executives of the company, and I was so thankful for the etiquette dinner and lessons! I knew how to handle myself during the meals and how to carry conversations better because of the practice.
Why would you recommend a business student take advantage of an internship opportunity?
Experience is more important than you think. I had to go through a few internships/jobs before I had an idea of what I wanted to do with my life or what I liked/disliked. Luckily, I found a company I want to stay with, a job that I believe is a perfect fit for me, and a job offer before my senior year even started. This opportunity helped me focus more on my senior year and less on stressing over finding a job after graduation.
You mentioned you have accepted an offer for a permanent position after you have graduated. What will you be doing?
I will be starting out by going into Speedway’s LPP (Leadership Participant Program), also known as District Manager Trainee. I will then go through a training period, which is essentially a more detailed version of my internship.
What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you?
Although I am graduating with a Finance degree, my passion is, and always has been, Public Speaking. My dream is to one day have a job that combines the two.
