Miller School to Support New Microenterprise Program

The Miller School of Entrepreneurship is working with partners to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Pitt County and eastern North Carolina. This recent article in Business North Carolina paints a strong picture of the players and current successes in this ecosystem.

To complement the focus of that story, the Miller School also is working with ECU partners, including its REDE Division, to launch a new innovative strategy aimed at growing the number of new small businesses throughout the region. Called the Microenterprise Program, you can learn more about it by clicking here.

“Recent data from the Small Business Administration shows that small businesses in North Carolina accounted for 99.6 percent of the businesses in the state and employed more than 1.6 million people in 2015,” said Dr. Mike Harris, director of COB’s Miller School of Entrepreneurship. “Small businesses are vital to the state’s economy.”

Harris added, “They (small businesses) are a clear mechanism for citizens to better their situations. The jobs created by these firms foster skill development, employ local residents and offer valuable skills training.”

The Miller School, the only named entrepreneurial school in North Carolina, recently provided a small business snapshot that focused on eastern North Carolina. You can find that story here.
