2019 Italy #COBGlobal: family-owned business at work

An ECUCOB, Study Abroad Travel Log By Dorothy Stroupe

I am a Junior studying Business Management, and I was excited to visit Antica Latteria Ducale, which is home to a 50-year old family-run business located in Modena and where they produce Parmigiano-Reggiano.

After seeing, experiencing, and even getting to taste the delicious cheese, I had a different outlook on Antica Latteria Ducale. Our guide did an excellent job of giving us first-hand experience on how sincere they are when they make their cheese.  This passion stood out to me. The workers at Antica Latteria Ducale put in a lot of time and effort to please their consumers, and it’s evident that they enjoy it.

Antica Latteria Ducale surely has the option to expand to a larger company with more cows, machines, workers, etc. They choose to stay small, stick with a personalized approach, and keep it a small family owned business. This approach touched me because I am deep into my coursework, and in my opinion, when the business is smaller, you can get more out of it and learn about its every aspect. This visit was such a good experience for everybody on our trip.

Before Antica Latteria Ducale, I didn’t think I would find it fascinating. I never thought Parmigiano-Reggiano would take SO much time and effort. I am so glad I experienced this small factory and how they make this premium cheese. This trip so far has been such a great experience, and I am so blessed to have this opportunity. I am excited to see what the upcoming week holds.
