Student Spotlight: Haley Williams

Raleigh native Haley Williams is a double-major in MIS and Marketing and completed an internship with Speedway this past summer. We asked Haley to share her internship experience.

How did you learn about your internship?
I learned about my internship at Employer in the Foyer.

How did the College of Business prepare you for this successful internship?
The College of Business had so many amazing resources to prepare me. In addition to our BUSI classes, I had the opportunity for multiple practice interviews to make me more comfortable with the process.

Describe your experience at this company.
My experience with the company has been phenomenal, as I was able to experience many aspects of the business. The internship overall was very eye-opening. I went through various phases that allowed me the opportunity to experience running a store, managing several stores, and working in recruitment in the office.

What was the moment during your internship you knew that your ECU COB education had paid off?
The moment that I knew that my COB education paid off was when my coworkers would compliment my mannerisms. Things like being punctual, being professional, and having adequate communication skills seems to be soft skills that many individuals lack. The College of Business’s “Think, Value, Communicate, Lead, ” will definitely take you a long way.

Why would you recommend a business student take advantage of an internship opportunity?
I would recommend a business student to take advantage of at least one internship opportunity because it allows you to see what you like and what you don’t. This particular internship was not aligned with my concentration however, it showed me the type of company culture that I desire to be a part of and gave me an invaluable experience.

What would be the one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you?
One thing that people are surprised to learn about me is that I have a cake business. I started baking at 6, and my freshman year of high school I started taking cake orders!
