Student Spotlight: David Crespo
Pink Hill native and MSA student, David Crespo, shares his internship experience at Crown Lift Corporation and how it led to some great opportunities.
How did you learn about your internship?
A good friend of mine knew that I was home for the summer and suggested that I apply for the internship.
How did the College of Business prepare you for this internship?
Aside from the technical skills needed, the College of Business prepared me by helping with communication skills such as mock interviews. These helped build my confidence and reinforce key skills which I utilized for the interview process.
Describe your experience at this company.
My experience was so great that I asked to extend my internship for the remaining of 2019 which then turned into a part-time position. The training was hands on and interactive. Help was always made available and the people made the experience a fun learning experience.
What was the moment during your internship you knew that your ECU COB education had paid off?
From the first task at the job I knew that ECU COB education had paid off. Excel skills and team skills were a big part of my internship. ECU COB provided me with a great foundation on excel and team skills, that all I had to do was apply them to real-life work experience.
I understand this internship led to a part-time job opportunity. Congratulations! Tell us about what you are doing in this role.
My current role at Crown Lift Corporation is a Part-Time Cost Accountant. Crown is a manufacturing plant; therefore, my job is to track and provide cost analysis reports for expenses. Some of the reports I handle are budget variances, Over/Under, journal entry adjustments, overtime, inventory, and capital project reports.
It is my understanding that you will be doing another internship this upcoming summer at KPMG. What will you be doing in this role?
I have been blessed with the opportunity to be a Tax Intern for KPMG’s Tax Services Practice in Norfolk, Virginia. All I know as of this moment, is that I will learn and experience the Tax Practice from a “Big Four” perspective and that’s exciting enough!
Why would you recommend a business student take advantage of an internship opportunity?
An internship is a great way to not only put to practice everything that the College of Business has taught you but to keep learning and building on that foundation. Using the tools learned at the College of Business, along with the learning experience from the internship – you will definitely have the advantage of being able to accept a full-time offer from an employer with confidence and know that you possess all that is needed to be successful.
What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you?
An interesting thing about me is that other than being a full-time student involved in Accounting Organizations and Club Sports are ECU, I have also been an assistant wrestling coach since 2016.
