Student Spotlight: Will Neuhoff

While interning at Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) , MIS student Will Neuhoff experienced a variety of workplace projects. From server automation to help desk support, to learning soft skills such as working in teams and leading projects, he was able to learn a little bit of everything in the IT Department.

“I was originally hired as help for both the infrastructure team and help desk team at Greenville Utilities, but about halfway through the internship I was moved over to the Apps Development team to work on a large scale server automation project. Greenville Utilities for years had been applying patches and doing server shutdowns, startups and reboots all manually on their 80+ servers. They gave me the opportunity to fix this issue. I used a online application called GitLab and used a integrated Continuous Development/Continuous Integration (CI/CD) system for push out updates to multiple servers at a time. I also reduced the number of command lines it took to restart a server from 20+ to 1. Meaning that basically anyone now has the ability to restart a server, as long as they have permission to do so, of course.”

Will’s internship at GUC has earned him praise from his supervisors and provided him great experience for when begins his search for full time employment after graduation in Fall 2020.  Congratulationss, Will! Keep up the good work.
