In turn with Evelyn Gonzalez

This week’s Intern of the Week is Evelyn Gonzalez of Greenville, North Carolina. She’s an accounting major and plans to graduate in December 2023. Gonzalez, an honors college student and a College of Business Copeland Diversity and Inclusion Fellow, is currently a year-long intern for SAS, and she recently touched base with us about her experiences with the Cary-based company and the COB.

How did the Cunanan Center for Professional Success help prepare you for your internship search?

The Cunanan Center for Professional Success helped me build a strong resume. By having a good resume, I stood out and got an interview with SAS.

What were your responsibilities during your internship? I am part of the general ledger team, so most of my responsibilities are during month-end closing. I oversee closing the T&E, P-Card, Cafes, Multiperiod Accruals, VAT, etc. I also am responsible for reconciling accounts for both U.S.A and Canada. I also help with royalties and other projects and procedures.

How did you apply what you learned in BUSI 1200, BUSI 2200, BUSI 3200 or BUSI 4200 to your internship?

One of the biggest things my BUSI classes taught me was the importance of LinkedIn. Before taking these classes, I did not know how to use LinkedIn. However, these classes taught me how to create a proper LinkedIn account. I found this internship through LinkedIn. If it weren’t for these classes, I probably would not have had this internship.

What was the most challenging thing you experienced during your internship, and how did what you learned in the COB help you overcome it? The most challenging this has been adapting to change. Every day something new changes. Through the things I have learned in my BUSI class about time management, I have been able to keep up with my work efficiently and ensure my job is being done effectively.

What has this internship taught you about responsibility?

This internship has taught me a lot about time management and teamwork. At SAS, we have a three-day close, which is a short time period compared to other companies. To ensure we close efficiently and effectively, we must know how to work together and manage our time.

Why would you recommend a business student take advantage of the Cunanan Center for Professional Success resources?

I would recommend the Cunanan Center because it offers College of Business students free resources. As a student, I think it is important we use any available resources because those resources allow us to improve our interview skills, resumes, communication, etc.
