The East Carolina University (ECU) Emerging Scholars Symposium is a three-day program for scholars nearing the end of their terminal degree studies and recent graduates, including postdoctoral scholars. The program is designed to diversify East Carolina University’s faculty pipeline with an emphasis on groups underrepresented in their field.

Being a supporter of the program, the College of Business helped ECU welcome accounting Ph.D. candidate Tendai Masaya (Yale University) and management Ph.D. candidate Marla White (University of Texas – Arlington) to campus. On Nov. 2, Masaya and White began their COB experiences by giving presentations to COB faculty and staff. After Q&As, both candidates visited the COB, met with the respective departments (accounting and management), were introduced to the COB’s Diversity and Inclusion Action Committee, met with graduate and undergraduate advisors from the Center of Student Success and closed the day with a tour of facilities and a meeting with the COB staff.

About his visit with ECU and the College of Business, Masaya said, “Each person I met was very collegial and happy with the work that they do at ECU (and the COB); faculty wants students to succeed, and a lot of them are ECU alumni themselves.”

Added Masaya. “I also had the opportunity to meet with four very successful Honors students, and they discussed their research and career aspirations. I got the sense that they are very happy to be in the COB at ECU and receive the support they need from the faculty, College and university. I also learned about the various resources the College offers faculty and students.”
