In turn with Molly White

Senior Molly Catherine White is from a small waterfront town, Edenton, North Carolina. She’s currently interning at Thermo Fisher Scientific and when she graduates next spring with her BSBA (MIS concentration), she plans to enroll in the COB’s MSA program.

We recently caught up with her about her internship and her experiences at the College of Business

How did the Cunanan Center for Professional Success help prepare you for your internship search?

I knew I wanted to pursue accounting before enrolling in college. During my freshman year, I was curious of what to expect and what steps I should take in college to pursue a career in accounting.

I learned from the Cunanan Center for Professional Success about the Student Accounting Society. I have been a member of SAS for over three years. I learned and met with Thermo Fisher Scientific at a SAS meeting, which resulted in my internship. The Cunanan Center for Professional Success also helped me review and edit my resume when looking for internships.

What were your responsibilities during your internship?

When I first started my internship, I worked mostly with accounts payable by assisting with process invoices and invoice exceptions. I worked on multiple spare parts projects and a fixed asset verification project. I helped implement new software programs for the finance department, as well. I am beginning to work on an accounts receivable project by helping forecast reorder points and quantities.

How did you apply what you learned in BUSI 1200, BUSI 2200, BUSI 3200 or BUSI 4200 to your internship?

The business courses I have taken so far have taught me interview skills, business etiquette, and how to create a resume. These skills aided me in receiving my current internship.

What was the most challenging thing you experienced during your internship, and how did what you learned in the COB help you overcome it?

Learning and fully comprehending all the tasks and processes was my biggest struggle, at first. I overcame this by networking and asking questions. Everyone was extremely helpful, and it helped me build relationships that would become extremely helpful with future projects.

How have you applied what you learned in your classwork to this position?

The accounting and business courses have prepared me for hands-on experiences. Learning business vocabulary — all the parts that go into making a business run — and how to use various software programs have been crucial to my success.

What has this internship taught you about responsibility?

Two things really stick out to me: prioritizing my daily responsibilities along with my projects and forming relationships within the company.

Why would you recommend a business student take advantage of the Cunanan Center for Professional Success resources?

These resources are available to help us all succeed. The Center helped me personally with interview skills, resume quality, and my graduate school applications.
