SHL students earn global certification

SHL Students Earn Global Certification

School of Hospitality Leadership (SHL) students enrolled in HMGT 4650 — Hospitality Financial Management — recently completed testing to earn a Global designation for Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA). Ninety-two percent (92%) of the students (22 students) in the course earned the CHIA this semester.

The Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA) is the only hotel-related certification that recognizes the skill and knowledge of lodging professionals. The certification is offered in partnership with STR, the global source for benchmarking and forecasting data. This globally recognized professional credential validates advanced knowledge in hotel industry analytics, including foundational metrics, definitions, formulas and methodologies.

The CHIA certification includes the following content areas: hotel industry foundations, hotel math fundamentals, the metrics used by the hotel industry, property level benchmarking and hotel industry performance reports and data.

SHL students have participated in this program for more than eight years, and SHL currently has the fourth-largest number of certification holders among global universities participating in the program.

“Hotel analytics have become an increasingly important skill for such professionals as revenue managers, general managers, corporate staff and research professionals,” said Dr. Bob O’Halloran, director of SHL.

The CHIA program was developed when Dr. Cynthia Deale of the SHL was ICHRIE President. Working with ICHRIE, STR Global and the American Hotel and Lodging Association and its Educational Institute, the School of Hospitality Leadership was one of the pilot schools for this designation.
