SHL Alumni Spotlight - Moriah A. Clarke

EWHA Women’s University, AIESEC & IVY Partnership focusing on South Korea’s Sustainable Development Goals

Moriah A. Clarke is a current graduate student in ECU’s Master of Science in Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality program, working on her degree remotely from South Korea.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality from East Carolina University and an Associate’s Degree in the Foundations of Business. After nine years managing a culinary and wine travel agency as the director of business development, Moriah recently accepted a position as marketing manager of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) at Camp Humphrey’s in Pyeongtaek, South Korea.

During the summer of 2022, Moriah worked with EWHA Women’s University in Seoul, alongside the prestigious international AIESEC and IVY organizations, to assist South Korea in meeting their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations to be achieved by 2030. EWHA Women’s University, AIESEC, and IVY developed the projects “Leave for Greener Pastures” and “Over Her Tears” to focus on SDG 5 (gender equality and universal access to sexual and reproductive rights and health), SDG 13 (climate action), and SDG 15 (life on land).

Moriah and her international team held a 3-day informative workshop in English and Korean in Seoul at EWHA Women’s University focusing on South Korea’s SDGs. During the workshop, Moriah and her peers delivered speeches on sustainability challenges and potential solutions in South Korea and worldwide. After the project, she and her team wrote and published two booklets focusing on the UN’s sustainable development goals in South Korea. The Leave for Greener Pastures project booklet provided information on combating climate change through fashion and environmental sustainability relationships to meet the needs of SDGs 5, 13, and 15. The Over Her Tears project booklet focused on providing education on sexual and reproductive health, STIs, sexual rights, safe abortion care, and more to satisfy SDG 5.6. Moriah and her team are hopeful that with continued measurable changes, informative education, and sustainable initiatives, they will be a small part of the solution pushing for the required transformations in sustainable development in South Korea.
