COB finds its new TIO director
Micah Sam (MBA’ 21) has been named the COB’s new technology, information and operations (TIO) director. For his new role, Sam will support, integrate and improve the technology, information and operational processes within the COB so that increased quality, efficiency and effectiveness of services and support are achieved. The office employs and integrates both proprietary and centrally provided resources and technologies beyond the standard level of support from central support units. He will manage seven support staff.
Sam replaces Len Rhodes, who served as executive director of TIO for ten years and who is now the executive director of the Thomas D. Arthur Graduate School of Business.
Who is Micah Sam?
Sam hails from the Triangle area. Born and raised in Durham, he attended high school in Raleigh, before completing his BA in English at UNC-Chapel Hill. Post-graduation, his career took a winding and circuitous path, beginning in music marketing and promotions, bending to work in immigration services, before landing in oncology care. After working at steadily more responsible positions at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center for 10+ years, he was recruited by the executive director of Cancer Services at ECU Health, and made the leap to Greenville to work in the (then new) Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Cancer Tower. During his time there as a multidisciplinary cancer care coordinator and quality liaison, his duties were manifold and diverse. Key accomplishments include: implementing telemedicine within the oncology service line, transitioning tumor boards to a hybrid virtual/in-person model during the pandemic, developing and tracking KPI’s for the service line scorecard, providing data analysis and reporting, creating business plans and pro forma to expand services, and (unofficially) operating as tech support for the oncology team.
In 2019, at the urging of his mentor, Sam began the MBA program at the ECU College of Business and Thomas D. Arthur Graduate School of Business. Despite the birth of a child, some crazy thing called COVID-19, and working full time, he managed to complete his MBA at the end of 2021, graduating Beta Gamma Sigma. “This experience left an indelible mark, both because it is an exemplary program whose lessons could be practically applied to any work environment and because it is a place full of insightful, kind, and exemplary people,” said Sam.
Sam could not be more excited (and humbled) to be joining the COB and looks forward to finding new ways to serve the mission of the College.
When not playing “monsters” with his 4-year-old daughter or hanging out with his incredibly supportive wife (this cannot be overstated), Sam can be found gaming, watching incredibly bad (and sometimes really good) horror movies, or making music on his computer/guitar/bass/piano.
