SHL's Khalilzadeh wins best presentation award at global conference

Dr. Jalayer (Jolly) Khalilzadeh presents research at global conference.

During June’s ATLAS Annual Conference 2024: Leisure & Tourism 2030 2024, Dr. Jalayer (Jolly) Khalilzadeh of the School of Hospitality Leadership presented “A Fractal Analysis of the Global Tourism System.” An ongoing research project on the global tourism system, his presentation won the Best Presentation Award as voted by conference participants.

According to Khalilzadeh, his research is about understanding the complex structure of global tourism.

“It explores whether global tourism can be seen as a fractal network, which is a pattern that repeats itself at different scales, like the branches of a tree. The study suggests that tourism might be a fractal system because it scales in a predictable way, like how transportation and accommodation follow specific patterns. Using 24 years of data, this study finds evidence that global tourism does indeed have this fractal structure. The research also shows how this fractal pattern has been changing over time, potentially due to shifts in how different parts of the tourism system are connected. “

“Understanding this complex structure can help us better manage tourism and make it more sustainable in the long run,” said Khalilzadeh.
