School of Hospitality Leadership Alumnus Spotlight: Josh Meeks

“The School of Hospitality Leadership at ECU gave me the unique opportunity to blend my passion for sports with my passion for tourism.

While completing my undergraduate degree in sports studies, I worked with ECU Athletics in two exciting roles—first with the social media team and later with The Pirate Club. My role with The Pirate Club, where I worked closely with donors in premium seating areas on game days, introduced me to sports hospitality. During this experience, I saw firsthand how sports, tourism, and hospitality intersect and impact the local economy. These experiences showed me that the positive effects of tourism and sports on a region depend on informed and strategic decision-making. This realization inspired me to pursue my Master’s in Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality at ECU’s School of Hospitality Leadership.

During my graduate studies, I deepened my industry knowledge, focusing on sustainability and how tourism can strengthen communities. One key question we explored was how to ensure tourism continues to positively impact the region for future generations. I also completed an internship with Barton College’s Athletics Communications Department, which provided additional practical experience.

After earning my Master’s in 2023, I accepted my current position with Visit Greenville-Play Greenville, NC Sports, where I combine my love for sports and tourism in a professional setting. One of the highlights so far has been working with the Little League Softball World Series. Thanks to ECU’s School of Hospitality Leadership, I have the skills and confidence to make a meaningful impact in this field, helping to foster growth in eastern North Carolina.”
