RMI donors make London trip possible

Thanks to North Carolina Surplus Lines Association (NCSLA) and Dave (CEO of RSUI Insurance) and Pamela Leonard, 12 College of Business risk management and insurance (RMI) students recently immersed themselves behind the scenes at Lloyds’ in London.

While there, the RMI students:

  • Met with a Lloyd’s broker, Bell & Clement, and discussed the international and London insurance marketplace.
  • Attended a session at Lloyd’s that focused on liability insurance and learned more about the role Lloyd’s exchange has in the liability and reinsurance markets.
  • Shadowed a Lloyd’s broker from Arthur J. Gallagher and visited various underwriting boxes to witness how the brokers placed business.
  • Separated into four groups, visited a syndicate office, which was arranged by Leonard, learned how the Lloyd’s systems work, and saw the underwriting process first hand.

“Having the chance to sit within an underwriting box at Lloyds of London was an incredible experience,” said Rachel Pleasants, a rising senior in the RMI program.  “Learning more about the London market will be very beneficial in my insurance career.”

“Visiting London was an amazing opportunity to learn more about the insurance industry and what it has to offer,” said recent graduate Jackie Fernandez. “I am forever grateful for those who donated to our program so we could have this chance to dig deeper into our careers.”

“Traveling abroad is a life-changing experience,” said Dr. Brenda Wells, director of COB’s risk management and insurance department. “We are so fortunate to have the industry support that makes it possible for us to give our students this amazing opportunity.  We are so thankful and grateful for NCSLA and the Leonards for their generosity.”

However, the entire trip was not just an industry immersion opportunity. Students also had a chance to sightsee and visit Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the Buckingham Palace changing of the guard, and other attractions.

Other participating students included Anna Bland, Evan Emrich, Zac Gallo, Jacinda Holmes, Logan Krause, Majd Laymoun, Katie Matthews, Alexandra Phan, Amelia Reiher and Hannah Woolard.
