ECU School of Hospitality Leadership Summer Study Abroad July 11-25, 2016
The ECU School of Hospitality Leadership will be Studying Abroad in Ecuador this summer from July 11-25, 2016.
Itinerary
MON JUL 11: USA – QUITO [-/-/D]
• 6a (Estimated) Depart from US to Quito (International Flight not included)
• 1p (Estimated) Arrive at the Quito Airport, meet your guide and transfer by private bus
(30-40min) to the nearby area of Cumbaya and USFQ’s campus
• Short welcome chat on campus, then meet with owners of homestay for pickup
o If USFQ is closed at this time, transfer directly to homestays on bus
• Optional, if early arrival: Tour the historic city center and/or visit Mitad del Mundo
• 7p Welcome dinner options:
o Quito: Floresta Area Restaurant
o Quito: Historic Center Restaurant
o Cumbaya Restaurant
• Overnight with homestays
TUE JUL 12: QUITO – GALAPAGÓS ISLANDS [B/-/-]
• 6a Early breakfast with homestays
• 7a Depart to the airport for flight to Galapagos Islands
• 9a Flight to Galapagos
• 11:30a Upon arrival, go through immigration and head into town to check in to hotel
• 12:30p Lunch on your own in the Progresso area
• 2p Visit the highlands, Progresso farming area, and turtle breeding center
• 4p Biogeography lecture (ECU)
• 7p Dinner on your own in San Cristobal
WED JUL 13: GALAPAGÓS ISLANDS [B/-/-]
• 7a Breakfast at the hotel
• 8a Depart for full day visit, stopping first at Kicker Rock, one of the most spectacular landmarks in the Galapagos with two volcanic rocks over 450 feet tall; Puerto Grande is next, with a beautiful beach, dune system and coastal plant species; then head to Isla Lobos, a small islet home to various birds, sea lions, and marine iguanas: o Time allotted for short lectures in visit sites: • Lunch and dinner on your own
THU JUL 14: GALAPAGÓS ISLANDS [B/L/-]
• 8a Breakfast at the hotel
• 9a GAIAS Orientation and morning project briefing
• 10a Visit to Playa Man, a beautiful sand beach area with resident sea lions
• 1p Box lunch
• 3p Afternoon lecture in GAIAS Hall
• Dinner on your own
FRI JUL 15: GALAPAGÓS ISLANDS [B/-/-]
• 8a Breakfast at the hotel
• 9a Morning Lecture and time to work on assignment
• Lunch on your own
• 2p Afternoon lecture and time to work on assignment
• Dinner on your own

SAT JUL 16: GALAPAGÓS ISLANDS [B/-/-]
• 8a Breakfast at the hotel
• 9a Visit to Puerto Chino, a pristine beach with white sand and black volcanic rocks
• Lunch on your own
• 2p Lecture at GAIAS
SUN JUL 17: GALAPAGÓS ISLANDS – QUITO [B/-/-]
• 7a Breakfast at the hotel
• 8a Transfer to airport for flight back to Quito
• 9a Flight to Quito
• 12p Arrive at airport and transfer by private bus to USFQ campus
• 1p Lunch on your own at the University
• 2p Intro to Continental Ecuador lecture
• 4p Visit Mitad del Mundo or the historic city center
o If one or none of these visits could be done first arrival day: • 7p Dinner on your own
• Overnight at homestays
MON JUL 18: QUITO – OTAVALO – ZULETA [B/-/-]
• 7a Breakfast with homestays
• 8a Depart and drive to the Mojanda lakes, twin volcanic crater lakes in the Andes
• 12p Lunch on your own in Otavalo
• 2p Visit the Otavalo Indigenous Markets where you can find traditional handicrafts
• Overnight close to Otavalo
TUE JUL 19: ZULETA – PAPALLACTA [B/-/-]
• 7a Breakfast at the hotel
• 8a Depart and drive to the Papallacta Highlands to hear an explanation about this complex and diverse ecosystem
• 12p Lunch on your own at local Papallacta restaurant
• 2p Drive to the hotel in the hot springs area
• 3p Check in to the hotel; time to work on assignments
• Dinner on your own with the night to relax in the hot springs
WED JUL 20: PAPALLACTA – YACUMA [B/-/-]
• 8a Breakfast at the hotel
• 9a Depart for Yacuma
• 10a Canoe trip into Yacuma Jungle EcoLodge
• 12p Explanation of the EcoLodge community, with information about traditional hunting methods, and Chontacuro grill (eating jungle insects) • 3p Visit to School, followed by welcome bonfire
• Dinner on your own

THU JUL 21: YACUMA [B/-/-]
• 7a Breakfast at the EcoLodge
• 8a Bird watching forest hike and medicinal plant explanation
• 11a Observe the different flora and fauna while river tubing
• 1p Lunch on your own
• 2p Learn about the mineral history of the area by panning for gold in the river
• 3p Try your hand at a blowgun activity, then learn how chocolate is prepared
• 6p Evening bonfire
• Dinner on your own
THU JUL 22: YACUMA – QUITO (3 hrs) [B/-/D]
• 7a Breakfast at the EcoLodge
