Chancellor’s Leadership Academy- Inspiring and Empowering

1

Two of the College of Business’ own, Dr. Cody Chullen and Tywanda Newsome, participated in this year’s Chancellor’s Leadership Academy.  Both would love to share more about this amazing experience and how it impacted their view of leadership.

“The Chancellor’s Leadership Academy was a great experience for me. I truly believe the CLA has inspired and enhanced my ability to become a great leader, both within the university and in my personal life.  All of the presenters had phenomenal stories about how their leadership success transpired.  The presenters explained that it took hard work and dedication to reach where they are today. Well some said it was just pure luck! However, I presume there is still a reason behind them becoming the great leaders they are today.” -Tywanda Newsome, Administrative Support Associate,Technology, Information and Operations

“The Chancellor’s Leadership Academy (CLA) broadened my perspective on both university and community issues and connected me to a great group of colleagues from across campus.  Each week, a group of us gathered to explore higher education leadership within the aims of the ECU’s strategic mission.  Our sessions covered an array of topics from “team building and leadership” to “followership and engagement” and were facilitated by various leadership experts from around Eastern NC.  In addition to exploring leadership through group discussions and by reading several books on the topic, we completed a number of other activities including experiential small group exercises and individual leadership assessments.  We also had the privilege of hearing a fireside chat at the Chancellor’s Residence with Kris Carroll, President and CEO of Grady White Boats.  My desire to develop as a leader and my inspiration to lead has only been furthered by my participation in the CLA.  I feel I will be able to use the knowledge I gathered during the academy to inform decisions in my department and college, as well as in university wide service capacities such as our faculty senate.” – Dr. Cody Chullen, Assistant Professor of Management.

“I sincerely respect the leaders of this great university more now than ever!  The CLA was very informative and collaborative, which enhanced my knowledge, and allowed me to network with some wonderful people from all different areas of the university. I would like to thank the CLA selection committee for choosing me to participate. I promise I will continue inspire, empower, and encourage others to take advantage of these opportunities as well.  I am now a CLA 2015 fellow!” – Tywanda Newsome.
