“I think the most special thing about the College of Business is that you can get a great education online, and the professors genuinely care about your success.”

Since 2013, Thomas Knight has successfully juggled two part-time jobs along with his full time distance education in the ECU College of Business. He says he loves combining business with technology, which has made Management Information Systems the perfect fit.

Knight earned his Associate’s Degree from Rockingham Community College two years ago before transferring to ECU. Joining the East Carolina community has meant a lot to him, especially since his father, and ECU alumni, passed away when Thomas was just three years old. Following in his father’s footsteps carries on the family legacy. He plans to continue with ECU’s online MBA program after graduation.

He recently earned the MIS Scholarship for 2015, and he was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the highest recognition a business student can receive.

He said, “Beta Gamma Sigma is such a prestigious organization. It makes me feel like I have been successful up to this point. I also feel very fortunate to be a member of an organization in which so many great business leaders have been a part of.”

Thomas encourages students to learn from professors and textbooks, but he says it’s equally important to think about things critically and develop your own opinions. He also recommends subscribing to a publication like The Wall Street Journal to keep apprised of issues that are happening in the business world, since you will see real-world examples of a lot of the things discussed in your classes.

He added, “My advice for upcoming College of Business students is to always try your best. You might think some classes are so difficult that you do not know how you will ever make it. However, those are some of the classes that will help you the most.”
